Tarot Cards | Cultural Redesign

Theme-Based Tarot Card Design
The narrative for this project is set for a travelling tarosophist who thrives on exploration and aspires to help people in finding their true spirit and sense of self. Inspired by the art and culture of the tribes of South Africa, here's a redesign of three cards chosen from the standard modern tarot deck:
'The Devil', 'Death' and 'The Fool'
I began the design process after researching on the symbolism and meaning of the different cards in a deck. As you can see below- to resonate with the native tribes and their culture, I sketched the designs using tribal masks as visual reference.

Although abstract, the final designs for each of the chosen cards and the colours used in each, were based on their visual associations with their symbolism:

The Devil- Caged in materialism
Death- Purging old memories/ baggage; New beginnings
The Fool- Naivety; Yet to develop; Exploration

I then proceeded to digitise the final designs and rendered the set in colour-coordinated themes-
